What do we do?
Established in 1902, for 120 years the purpose of the Society is to promote and encourage Manitoba’s emerging and professional visual artists. Members of the Society organize exhibits of Manitoba artists, artist-focused social events and participate in educational ventures, such as lectures, slide presentations and workshops.
MSA is a non-profit, volunteer organization. Members are encouraged and expected to contribute time, talent and interest to the betterment of the mission of our organization.
The activities of the Society are supported by membership fees, donations, and fundraising events. MSA uses fundraising to assist in support of its major annual event charity which is OJCE.
MSA Charities:
OJCE is the most important registered charity event of each MSA year. This Provincial Annual Open Juried Competition and Exhibition, allows both emerging and professional Manitoba artists an equal opportunity to participate in a major exhibition and be jurored for Awards of Excellence. Any Manitoba artist over 16 years of age may enter and compete. All entries are displayed online, the selected entries win a place in the gallery exhibit.
MSA also supports annual awards to fine arts students at Brandon University and graphic arts students at Red River College. To donate, please consult website at mbsa.ca
Some recent activities:
During the recent 3 years of pandemic, MSA has pivoted to include online events, both for art talks, meetings, competitions and exhibits. The 2020 and 2021 Open Competition Juried Shows were exclusively digital, including its traditional Juror Lecture Evening and Award Recognition Presentations. These events have been recorded and are available on YouTube. The 2 online shows attracted 20,000 visitors. The most recent 90th OJCE in 2022 was a hybrid exhibition, (both online & a gallery exhibit), attracting 8000+ visitors.
Returning to a physical show format, the 91st Manitoba Juried Competition & Exhibition for 2023 will feature a hybrid show that is both online for 3 months and an exhibition of selected works at a gallery for one month .
